Improvement: I would like a way for the system to deal with retail products

What we're looking for is a way for the system to automatically deal with retail products. This is still in the investigating stages, so we'd like to collect some info from the Community and get a feel of what we need to do.
We currently have ways to deal with retail products, but it would be great to have an automated and seamless way of doing it. For example, we need a way for the software to recognise retail items in order to:
- automatically calculate and apply GST to retail items only
- prevent discounts being applied to retail items only
Should we be tracking anything else, or keeping anything else in mind? Is there anything in the list above that we shouldn't be including? Thanks guys! Keen to get some ideas on this!
